The 100-400mm IS II delivers incredible reach in a package that remains remarkably handheld-friendly. Its optical configuration is sophisticated, utilizing 21 elements in 15 groups, including four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and two Super HR (High Refractive Index) elements to ensure crisp, high-contrast images even at the 800mm equivalent focal length. For those needing even more distance, it is fully compatible with the MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters, reaching up to a staggering 1600mm equivalent. Unlike the original version, this lens now supports Sync IS, allowing the lens's optical stabilization to work in tandem with the camera body’s stabilization for rock-steady shooting. It features a versatile Focus Limiter switch with three ranges (1.3m–∞, 1.3m–6m, and 6m–∞) to speed up subject acquisition. The build quality has been bolstered to IPX1 standards, and the front element now features a fluorine coating to repel water and oil. With a minimum focusing distance of 1.3m and a 0.57x (equivalent) magnification, it also serves as a powerful tele-macro tool for capturing detailed shots of insects and flowers from a safe distance.
